PRESTON resident Damian Burton, a transport security manager, has been invited to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's 2020 Summit in Canberra.
He is among nine Darebin residents joining 1000 people chosen from across Australia to meet in Canberra next week to discuss such topics as health, creativity, indigenous Australia, the environment, productivity and the economy.
Mr Burton, who works for a national port and rail operator, will discuss "Australia's future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing region and world".
The former Australian Army Lieutenant-Colonel said changing world circumstances had made the country more vulnerable and strengthening partnerships between the Government and corporations such as the one he worked for were increasingly important for internal security. "Since September 11, we've taken on much more responsibility for monitoring people coming into the ports, all of whom now have to undergo an ASIO check," he said.
Others from Darebin in the summit include filmmaker Ana Kokkinos, Northcote High School principal Gail Davidson, Victorian Aboriginal Childcare Agency CEO Muriel Bamblett, peace activists Felicity Hill and Tim Wright, film producer Sue Maslin, Ethnic Youth Council project officer Hala Abdelnour and Asialink CEO Jenny McGregor.
